I never have time to read. At least, that’s what I like to tell people. I am regularly telling people my sad, busy mom story as I binge watch episodes of Scandal on Netflix. I’m great at starting books, but I almost never finish them. I love collecting them (so cute on my coffee table!). I thought this was going to be a permanent trend for me until recently, when I discovered the joy of audio books. While they are not nearly as cute, it turns out they are a lot easier to actually get through. I mean, they READ themselves!
As you know from my last blog post, I started the year out with Shonda Rhimes book, Year of Yes: How to Dance it Out, Stand in the Sun, and Be Your Own Person. I shared with you my goal of saying no to things that I do simply because I think I should. So here it is, I’ve decided to take you on my journey through 100 books this year. Hopefully, most will make me think about my life a little differently or change the way I do business. If not, I hope they make me laugh!
Hold me accountable! Ask me what I am reading and judge me harshly if I can’t answer you. Let’s face it, goals are easy to start but SO hard to FINISH! Which brings me to the next book I’ll share with you, a book by Jon Acuff called Finish. I SO needed this in my life! New Year’s resolutions…why do I even make them when I am literally talking myself out of them the following week? Sign-up for a ½ marathon, they said! It’ll make you more motivated to train, they said! I call BS; I just end up killing myself the two weeks before the race or discover an “unexpected” business trip that weekend.
Finish is for the 99% of us that have a hard time following through on some of our goals. Jon happened to be the keynote speaker at a recent conference I attended and he is not only hilarious, he is so relatable. His suggestions for coaxing ourselves to finish things are extremely useful and make a ton of sense. He explains ways for discovering how you are motivated and how to use it to your advantage. Most importantly, he talks about how goals should be FUN! They don’t need to be terrible, painful, or hard to make you feel great when you accomplish them!
GOAL→ Do yoga 3x a week→ REWARD→ Get to drink WINE! See how easy that was?
Seriously ya’ll, check out his book and good luck finishing those scrapbooks of newborn photos and mementos…especially now that your kids are 12. ;)
